Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #54
This enormous wooden hotel at the Isles of Shoals was built in 1847 and burned
in 1914. Today this entire expanse of Appledore Island is empty except for a bird-banding
lab at the summer Marine Shoals Lab. A reconstruction of poet Celia Thaxter’s
island garden is maintained here by volunteers. It is visible as a fenced area
in front of the cottage in the upper left. (click to see)
