Resident Catholics were virtually unknown in Portsmouth before the Revolution. Early worshipers met in a confectioner’s shop. By 1836 Portsmouth was a mission of the parish church in Dover. St. Mary’s was organized in 1851. When the firstl building burned in 1871, the Church of the Immaculate Conception was erected in its place. This church dates from 1933.
