Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #43
This rare 1857 ambrotype is the only known image of one of Portsmouth’s early
hotels. It stood on Pleasant Street where the Custom House building is today.
This solid building – with its clapboard front and brick sides – was originally
Farmer’s Hotel. Built in the 1830s, it therefore was part of the downtown for
a fleeting 30 years or less.
