Historic Portsmouth #346

Got Snow? “Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night…” Wait a minute. That was the postman’s creed. Who knew the milkman offered the same dedicated service? But that was back in the day. Seems we are not always looking at the past through rose-colored glasses. This service beats pizza delivery in any blizzard, but is long gone in these parts. (See photo below)

Even those old enough to remember milk delivery service (including yours truly) likely never saw delivery by horse-drawn sleigh. Charles A. Garland (1856-1913) was listed in the 1901 Portsmouth City Directory as a farmer living on Woodbury Ave. near Newington. He was an uncle of Amelia Garland Patch. (This photo came from the Garland Patch Collection.) He lived at his brother James’s farm on Woodbury Avenue near its intersection with Gosling Road at the edge of the city. This is the third in our Athenaeum series of ancient snow pictures. (Photo courtesy of the Portsmouth Athenaeum.)
