Rye Lifesaver in 1874/Strawbery Banke Archive
Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #98

The ornate details of the Jenness Beach Lifesaving Station belie its serious purpose. In the century leading up to this 1874 structure 24 ships had been wrecked along the rocky Rye coast. The "stick style" government-approved structure was securely braced for coastal gales. Yet the design included ornamental details of sea birds and dolphins.
