HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #38

In May 1884, three months before this photo was taken, these six men were starving to death in the frozen Arctic. Although they pushed further north than any explorers before, the Greely expedition failed when supply ships failed to reach them for two years. Some of the 25 men resorted to cannibalism. Survivors, including Adolphus Greely (center with beard) were sent to recuperate at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
