HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #35
Portsmouth’s "robber baron" came to town as a barefoot Barrington boy. He became
mayor and a NH congressman. He owned a brewery, button & shoe factories, insurance
companies, a bank, a theater, many hotels, racing stables, electric, telephone
& railroad companies. Jones was not, however, a philanthropist and died in
1902 worth $5 million.
