Traffic cop on Congress Street/ Strawbery Banke ArchiveStrawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #94

This shot of Portsmouth’s Congress Street will jog only the eldest memories. Chick’s Lunch Room (replacing Alvira Amazeen’s eatery) survived until the 1920s. Charles Capois’s pool room appeared next door around 1918. It shared the building with the barbershop of Christopheros Roylos and the tailor shop of Miltos Karipes. No gourmet restaurants here, but lunch cost only 50 cents.
