Anchor of the USS Boxer, 1905 / Strawbery Banke ArchiveStrawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #79

The USS Boxer was among the very last sailing vessels built in the massive Franklin Shiphouse that stood at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard starting in 1838. At Just 364 tons, this training brig was small compared to the ships that had been launched here. By October 7, 1904 when this photo was taken, the age of sail was over. The next vessels to be built in the enormous wooden structure were submarines.
