Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #224

Muriel Barnaby Foley of Kittery was surprised to see herself in my recent book about Strawebery Banke Museum. Now 77, Muriel was probably three years old when this picture was taken by her Puddle Dock home on Jefferson Street. (Continued below)

HISTORIC PHOTOS of the Greater Portsmouth Area appear here week

Her father, Muriel says, owned his own truck, moved coal, potatoes and sawdust, and delivered groceries for the WPA during the Depression. She recalls sledding down "Liberty Hill" off Court Street and watching the ladies folding sheets at the laundry near the Liberty Pole on Marcy Street. As a teenager Muriel babysat for a young Sherm Pridham, later city librarian. Her family moved to Gate Street, then to Kittery where she met electronics technician Stephen Foley who trained at the navy yard. They have been married 58 years and read the Portsmouth Herald daily.
