USM_Smuttynose_ArtifactSMUTTYNOSE ISLAND

The ongoing Smuttynose archaeology dig is a five-year project. Dr. Nathan Hamilton runs the field school from the University of Southern Maine. Students stay at Appledore Island in cooperatoin with the Shoals Marine Lab and work with the Smuttynose Stewards. Here are nine images from the 2009 dig. (See photos below)

The following photos were provided by Prof. Nathan Hamilton and his team. Size is indicated by the measurement figure at the bottom of each image.

For more on the 2009 dig, read THE FULL STORY in SeacoastNH.com. We'll post results of the 2010 and other digs when received on a separate web page. -- JDR

REMEMBER: Don't dig alone. Only artifacts removed from the ground in a professional and scientific manner have value. Amateurs interested in working on annual "digs" should contact USM or the Shoals Marine Lab.Arfiacts are more value under the earth than when removed causually. If you accidentally uncover an artifact -- contact your local hsitorical society or university archaeology dept.
