Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #103
Launched here in 1845, the USS PORTSMOUTH was instrumental in the conquest of California. The 24-gun first-class sloop is seen here around 1878, its rigging hung like a clothesline with sailors’ frocks and jackets. The PORTSMOUTH aided in the suppression of the slave trade along the African coast and ended its service in 1911 as a training vessel in New Jersey.
