The 1830 poem "Old Ironsides" stirred public opinion against Navy plans to scrap the 1797 frigate. This rare photo is among the oldest in US Navy archives. It shows the USS Constitution being refit as a training vessel at the Portsmouth Shipyyardl. This image also shows the new $1.3 million drydock that had a steam-powered hydraulic system.
