HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #143

Historians often track the same ship through various names. The USS Benicia that served in the Pacific after 1869 was originally launched at Portsmouth Yard as the Algoma a year earlier. The Benicia transported King David Kalakaua of Hawaii (the man who popularized the hula dance) to San Francisco in 1874.
