Social clubs were all the rage in the late 1800s. Fraternal groups as diverse as the Ku Klux Klan and the Colored Knights of Pythias met regularly in downtown Portsmouth. This finely dressed gathering is the Friendship Club of Portsmouth in 1888, among a growing number of organizations run by local women. (click for full pic)
