The Old Town Pump |
Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #52
By 1797 locals who could afford the service had water delivered directly into their homes via the Portsmouth Aqueduct Company. The rest used traditional town pumps, as here in the South End with its treeless narrow streets. Artist Helen Pearson lovingly sketched this pump again in her 1913 city guidebook "Vignettes of Portsmouth". It has since disappeared.
