Victorian Barbers on Outing (C) Strawbery Banke ArchiveStrawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #73

This may look like the lumberjack skit from Monty Python. It is actually a group of barbers during an outing in 1886. They may be posing at Chauncey’s Creek in Kittery Point. This gathering represents roughly the same number of professionals listed as "hair dressers" in the Portsmouth City Directory for that year. They are, to the man, impeccably groomed for a picnic in the woods.
