The Mind of Caleb Gurney |
Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #51
You know his photos, not his face. Caleb Stevens Gurney (1848 – 1924) came to the Portsmouth Shoe Company as a shipping clerk in 1889. Applying his earlier training, Gurney systematically photographed all key buildings and sites in the city. He collected them into the invaluable guidebook "Portsmouth, Historic and Picturesque" (1902). Gurney then started a successful umbrella company and retired to Boston.
