The Flying Submarine

Inside Franklin Shiphouse
Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #20

Even this fully inflated blimp did not fill the massive Franklin Shiphouse, once among the largest wooden buildings in the world. In 1915 a German contractor borrowed the building to inflate his experimental balloon at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Built in 1836 the shiphouse was consumed by a massive fire exactly 100 years later.
