Liberty Bridge, Puddle Dock/ Strawbery Banke Archive
Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #105

The old "Liberty Bridge" was built in 1731 over the cove at what later became Puddle Dock. The 85-foot Liberty Pole topped by a four-foot carved eagle was added on July 4, 1824. It honored Portsmouth’s Stamp Act protest in 1766 when angry locals marched against a British tax on paper. The bridge is gone, but the pole still stands by the flowerbeds at Prescott Park.
