HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #125

Despite extensive granite quarrying in New England, Portsmouth had few stone buildings. This rare example known as the "Stone Store" stood at the base of Market Street. Built in the 1830s, Around 1860 Joshua Brooks opened a grain and flour business here. The locally-milled grain business faded soon after its this 1894-era photo.
