HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #8
Gunner S.J. Skaw and crew strike a casual pose with their 8-inch gun aboard the
USS Olympia. Under Admiral George Dewey this group fired the first shots in the
Spanish American War. Dewey, who married a Portsmouth woman, is known for his
command: "You may fire when you are ready, Gridley." Photographer LV Newell caught
this shot at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
