Window of building on Shaefe Street / Strawbery Banke Museum
Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #109

Portsmouth’s earliest business district looked like this. Wooden houses often included families upstairs with their shops at street level. This house at the corner of Sheafe and Chapel streets was built on the ruins of the 1813 fire that gutted "the downtown. Remnants of the old shop were visible in 1874, but the building was torn down and replaced.
