Salute to New Castle

New Castle cannon saluteStrawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #76

In December 1774 Paul Revere roused Portsmouth citizens to storm the fort at William and Mary and steal King George’s guns and powder. This photo shows another rare day in which the fort, renamed Fort Constitution, saw action. Soldiers fired this salute on August 17, 1893 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of New Castle as a separate New Hampshire town. No tourists were injured.
