HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #92

Early Portsmouth Athletic Club members strike a group pose at their Congress Street gymnasium in 1888. Members and officers were largely clerks, not manual laborers, who knew the value of regular physical conditioning. The photo shows juggling clubs, hanging rings, a trapeze bar, boxing gloves, weights and punching bag. The group also sponsored a baseball team and a reading room.
