The poster pinned to the wall on the left in this 1898 photo reads "Remember the Maine!" Recruits Wanted". Pictured here is the First Regiment, Company A, New Hampshire Volunteers, taken on the steps of the old 1836 Portsmouth courthouse. In the back rows wearing civilian clothes are likely the newest recruits.
