HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #96

The first of three devastating downtown fires began on Sunday December 26, 1802 at 4 a.m. In Market Square little but the former North Church and Old State House were left standing. New "handsome brick buildings" were soon being built to replace burned wooden structures, creating the familiar 19th century city we know today.
