HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #97
Shipbuilding flourished up and down the Piscataqua from the mid- 1600s until the this picture was taken. On August 5, 1886, builder William Fernald launched the three-mated schooner "Lizzie J. Call" at Freeman’s Point. Fernald had outlived shipbuilders like George Raynes and Daniel Marcy. His was the last sizeable sailing vessel to come from a private local shipyard in the 19th century.
