A forlorn rider waits in a rented cart on State Street around 1886. The Custom House building is visible in the background. at the corner of Pleasant Street. Downtown shops like those of James Sanborn, shoemaker, and Gardner J. Greenleaf, carriage builder and blacksmith, were located nearby.
