Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #118

Portsmouth’s first printer Daniel Fowle built this odd-shaped office (now gone) to fit his lot at the corner of Pleasant and Washington streets. Fowle and his enslaved pressman Primus printed NH’s first newspaper here on October 7, 1756. Fowle moved here after being jailed in Boston for allegedly printing seditious pamphlets.
