CarpentersStrawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #32

This mid-1880s picture shows a crew (at right) tearing down a house built by joiner Jonathan Low around 1745. The tiny 27-foot square gambrel-roofed home was built on a land inherited by a colonial widow. The house on the corner of Washington and Court streets once sheltered two full families. It was deconstructed to make way for apartments that were later demolished too. (click to see)

BONUS CLOSEUP
Who is the guy in the suit standing stiffly out front while the crew works on the house? We have no idea, but here is a closer look. Perhaps he is a relative of yours.
