HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #64

These two ancient families dominated the fishing industry at the island town of Gosport, NH until 1873 when Star Islanders all sold their land to a hotel developer. Here in 1890 they continued that tradition at Long Wharf on Water Street (now Marcy). Although a murky double-exposure, nine ships can be seen In this photo. Note the "fish flakes" or drying racks like those used at the Isles of Shoals since 1600.
