Oxen Plow Portsmouth Streets (c) Strawbery Banke
Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #29

Teams of oxen once "rolled" the city streets to flatten the snow for sleighs. This photo from a stereoscopic slide shows Pleasant and State streets likely in 1867. Business signs indicate a milliner, an apothecary, a book and music store, a bank and the "Daguerrean Gallery" of the Davis Brothers who took this early photograph.
