Much like the African burying ground in Portsmouth, the Protestant cemetery was soon covered over by commercial streets and shops as the city expanded. In 1905 an American team exhumed what may be Jones’ mummified body and transported it to Annapolis, MD. In this rare photo, shopkeepers (left & center) watch as a workman (right) removes dirt from the catacombs below a Paris street. (Courtesy Masons Grand Lodge, Boston. All rights reserved.)
