HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #139

A rare 1882-era photo captures this lost rural culture of traveling basketmakers. Often distrusted as "gypsies" the "hill people of Sasanoa" lived at the base of Mt Agamenticus. Like a similar community at "Leathers City" near Barrington, these itinerant artisans visited cities only to sell their wares.
