Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #129
In 1874 Thomas Bailey Aldrich wrote of Portsmouth: "Market Street is the stronghold of the dry- goods shops." Here in 1895 Henry C. Hopkins was learning to compete in a changing world. He replaced the slogan of his predecessor that read "everything first class". Hopkins, instead, proclaimed that he could "meet of beat Boston prices".
