A Simple Victorian Parlor

HP03cuStrawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #3

Even in a simple home the Victorian parlor became extraordinarily elegant. This home is a virtual gallery of English Parianware and Italian cut stone. Although photographed about 1890, the tastes of the elderly owners harkens to threee or four decades earlier -- a window into an earlier time. A grotesque carving of a fish, probably a sculpin, hovers above the central painting, mixing local craftsmanship with international works.
