Lighthouse Keeper / Strawbery Banke ArchiveStrawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #55

The iron 1877 lighthouse at New Castle had not yet been installed when Joshua Card became keeper of the old wooden lighthouse there in 1874. He stayed on the job until his retirement in 1909 at age 85. The public has only recently been allowed inside this historic monument with its spectacular view thanks to the volunteer Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse.
