The Return of Frank James Print Email

The real Frank James portrayed by Henry Fonda in 1940 film on The Dingus Project / SeacoastNH.comTHE DINGUS PROJECT
Jesse James in Film #18

Finally, poor Frank James gets his due with this 1940 sequel to the 1939 film starring Tyrone Power. This is a largely imagined and falsely dramatic version of the facts. Henry Fonda reprises his role as the bookish, reluctant outlaw brother of Jesse James. Director Fritz Lang is best known today for his silent science fiction classic Metropolis (1927).

The Remarkable Andrew Print Email

The Haunting of Hibbard House Print Email

Breakfast room at Hibbard House, Bath, NH / SeacoastNH.com
We came, we stayed, we’re coming back. Congressman Harry Hibbard turned down a seat on the US Supreme Court to live here. Some say he still walks the halls of his Federalist mansion. His friend President Franklin Pierce visited, back when Bath, NH was in its hey-day. Today it is far off the beaten path, which is exactly what we like best.

The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid Print Email

Great Northfield Minnesota Raid on the Dingus PRojectTHE DINGUS PROJECT
Jesse James in Film #16

Pitched as "The West the way it really was!" this stoned-out 1970s western is anything but accurate. Dreamy and rambling, the film focuses on Cole Younger rather than Jesse James. It does capture interesting psychological portraits of Jesse and Cole, but the otherwise talented director/ writer Philip Kaufman misfires here with almost every shot.

Ride with the Devil Print Email

Skeet Ulrich, Tobey Maguire and Jewell in Ride with the Devil on the Dingus ProejctTHE DINGUS PROJECT
Jesse James in Film #15

A young Southern man from Missouri joins the rebel bushwackers during the Civil War. What he sees in the bloody guerilla warfare leads him to question his allegiance to the rebel cause. Yet Ang Lee’s compassionate film offers insights into the minds of young men like Jesse James, trapped in a violent world that tore the western states apart.
