PENNY GOURMET
Portland, Maine
Robert Frost must have had Maine diners in mind when he wrote that he had "meals to go before I sleep". Established in 1991, Becky’s is worth seeking out when passing through Portland. It’s just down the hill from the Holiday Inn or a few blocks from the action in the Old Harbor shopping area. Look for the line out the door.
Becky’s on Hobson’s Wharf
390 Commercial Street
Portland, ME 04101

Official web site
Most diners offer taste and price over looks. Becky’s is especially so. The warm and value indoors are inversely proportional to the exterior design which is little more than a red shoebox in the stark port section of Portland. You can check out the menu on their web site. Once I found my $2.95 breakfast and a warm seat at the counter, this frugal aficionado was home.
The night discovering Becky’s, we had dined at one of the ritziest gourmet spots in the funky cobblestone alley of Portland’s renovated harbor section. We waited almost an hour and a half for a fish dinner (the whole bass including head and tail simmering in a pan of clams and veggies) at $25 a pop for each entrée. The next morning at Becky’s, despite the Sunday morning rush, we were seated and fed in 15 minutes. Next time, we’re going to skip the classy nightspot and try the famous fish chowder at Becky’s.
Not many diners still open at 4 am. Becky’s does, since that is breakfast time for the hardworking locals on the whart. And your chances of finding this diner open are better than most – 362 and ½ days a year. (Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and Christmas eve only.). So far we’ve only sampled the cheapest meal on the menu, but we will be back.
Rather than tell you more, read the restaurant reviews and meet the staff on the official Becky's web site. The menu is there as well, and a chowder recipe.
