By the late 19th century the Smith Monument had lost its
pedestal and was in ruins as it remained for over a century.

With the inscription on the pedestal gone, this sign was
added to explain the purpose of the weather beaten memorial
at the tip of Star Island at the Isles of Shoals.

Despite its battered condition, the momument was still
among the Top 10 spots visited by tourists including this
group at the turn of the 20th century.
