Ogden Nash

Comic Poet (1902 - 1971)

He had the fortune – for us – to be buried in New Hampshire. But humorist and poet Ogden Nash grew up in New York and Georgia. He attended school in Rhode Island and attended, but did not finish college at Harvard. If his terse poems read like advertising copy, it's not accident since he began work writing ads. His poems were perfect for the clever New Yorker in its hey-day and he joined the staff there in 1932. In all he wrote 19 books of poetry and 1,500 poems have been catalogued. In an odd final twist, Nash, a New Yorker, died in Baltimore, but was buried in North Hampton, NH. Nash was the first American chosen to grace the 37 cent postage stamp in 2002, the centennial of his birth. The official Post Office press release states: "A gentle satirist, Nash poked fun at human shortcomings without pessimism. He wrote on many subjects, but all of his poems expressed his dry wit and demonstrated his playfulness with language."
