Richard HaynesRichard Haynes' nine year photographic study of the historic buildings in Portsmouth's Strawbery Banke Museum is nothing short of a masterpiece. The work, part of a pending color photography book, is among the finest we have seen, and SeacoastNH.com is honored to offer this gallery for the first time on the Internet.

Richard says he originally migrated from South Carolina to New York City. At the age of nine he saw his first movie there, "Ben Hur", and fell in love with the camera. A junior high school teacher steered him also toward painting and he entered the High School of Art & Design in 1965. After the Air Force and earning his BFA, Richard received an MFA in Photography from Pratt Institute. He worked his way up through the ranks at Holt, Rhinehart & Winston, and eventually turned to freelance work. His clients now include Houghton-Mifflin, Prentice-Hall, Oxford University Press and Reader's Digest.

Besides his photography, Richard is also an accomplished painter. He has recently collaborated on a project for the United Farm Workers. His logo design appears at the top of our Black History site and his photos illustrate the Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail book and web site. --JDR
