Paul Jesep addresses gathering on official "Portsmouth Historical Society Day" declared in city proclamation. The burial site is to the right with the John Paul Jones House in the background.
Local dignitaries do what they do best as the capsule is ceremoniously covered in soil. In this picture from left to right: NH Congressman John Sununu, State Senator Burt Cohen, Mayor Evelyn Sirrell, Governor's Councilor Ruth Griffin.
State Senator Burt Cohen of New Castle joins the crowd inside after the ceremony. Speeches by Cohen and others gave the event a sense of historic importance.
Adding mood music, a harpist on the landing in the historic 1756 home plays beneath the watchful eyes of John Paul Jones. Jones walked down this landing from his Portsmouth bedroom in 1777 and again in 1783 during an 18-month stay in the city. He sat for the Houdon statue in France after sailing the Ranger to Paris and meeting with Ben Franklin.
